We sat down with the creative team behind Marvel's legendary Secret Wars crossover event.
Marvel's Secret Wars remains one of the most ambitious crossover events in comic book history. We had the privilege of speaking with members of the original creative team about the making of this landmark series.
A: 'Mattel wanted a comic that would showcase all their Marvel action figures in one big story. But Jim Shooter turned that commercial mandate into something genuinely epic. He wanted stakes, he wanted consequences, and he wanted it to matter.'
A: 'The key was the Beyonder. By creating this all-powerful entity, we had a reason for everyone to be in the same place. Then it became about finding the personal stories within the cosmic conflict — Spider-Man's self-doubt, Doom's ambition, the X-Men's isolation.'
A: 'The symbiote suit came from a fan submission, believe it or not. But integrating it into Secret Wars gave it a narrative weight that made it unforgettable. That's the magic of comics — ideas can come from anywhere.'
A: 'It proved that crossover events could be more than marketing exercises. When done right, they can reshape an entire universe.'
